Name Stories

Works toward bringing the stories of individuals to the fore in the multicultural experience.  Participants write and share stories about their names and nicknames, what they mean, why they were given them, and how they relate to them.

Preparing and Assigning

Sit in a circle and ask participants to tell stories about their names.  Suggest some or all of the following possibilities for inclusion in their stories:

1. Who gave you your name?  Why?

2. What is the ethnic origin of your name?

3. What are your nicknames, if any?

4. What do you prefer to be called?
