TFH and JCMA – Victoria

Despite the lockdown in Victoria, it’s been wonderful to see our ICUP schools adapting to the virtual environment and forging ahead with activities under the guidance of our valued partner, JCMA.

The team at Ballarat High School worked hard to build awareness and celebrate cultural diversity. The school’s celebration of culture day in the school community was postponed due to restrictions, so they took to Facebook to celebrate a day of culture. With an updated profile picture, displays around the schools and a specially designed flag for the school flagpole at the school, they still managed to mark the occasion. Regular Facebook posts showcased the displays around the school and were a great way to represent the school’s rich and diverse population.

By creating a ‘Harmony Week’ in July, another ICUP school, Carranballac College, was able to greatly expand the number of events, activities, displays and visiting guests around the theme of intercultural harmony. Staff and the ICUP team have seen this intentional emphasis bring about a deeper level of change in the school community’s attitudes and values. Around the two campuses, walls are covered with displays and various installations because the art teachers have consciously integrated a wide range of cultural styles and media into their curriculum, focusing on embracing cultural acceptance, affirmation and diversity.
